Getting a new garage door installed on your home is a very exciting thing! Your homes exterior looks so bright and radically different with a new garage door. You might think it’s a small thing, but a new garage door is like a new haircut; it makes the home look totally different than it looked before. The only thing more exciting than getting a new door is deciding what to do with the old one!
Now, it is true that Hung Right Doors includes remove and disposal of your old garage door. But if you want to keep your old panels that is totally an option! There are many things that you can do with your old garage door panels. Afterall, reusing, repurposing and recycling is an old American value.
1. Make Your Garage Door Panels Into Raised Garden Beds!
A brilliantly creative member of our team, Amanda, actually used some old garage door panels to do this. She has a gorgeous, fenced garden full of raised beds that she built herself using old garage door panels. But simply using screws made for some of the metal panels, she was able to fashion the old panels into raised beds that were the perfect size for garden plots.
2. Use Old Wooden Panels for Cute Floating Shelves
You can cut your garage panels down to the length you want for a build in shelving unit and mount them to the walls for a look that is totally shabby chic! Just sand them and maybe a new coat of paint and you’re in business. You can use virtually any type of shelving mount that you want. The sky’s the limit!
3. Organize Your Entryway by Creating a Coat Rack!
This option would probably work best with an old wood door panel, but you can take a door panel, sand and paint it. Then attack hooks, and card plates for name cards. Just screw on a few hooks that you can find anywhere from Hobby Lobby to Home Depot.
Make sure to mount it to studs in your wall or use hefty sheet rock anchors to attach the panel to the door, and you’re in business! Enjoy a better organized mud room in just an afternoon.
4. Make a Cute Backyard Bench to Sit on
You can cut down the panels and add a cushion to the seat panel to make an old wooden garage door panel into an adorable backyard bench. The beauty of this idea is in its ease; you can sand and paint the panels to create a brand-new look, or you can go shabby chic and leave the existing paint.
5. Use the Window Sections to Make a Greenhouse
Using window sections from old garage doors is a cost-effective way to either build a whole greenhouse or make a window wall in a shed to create a growing space for veggies and flowers! This is made even more economical because you are using recycled materials to grow your own food!
There you have it! Garage door panels can be used for so much more than just an entry point to your home. Let your creativity fly and go for it! Ask your Installer to leave all or just a few of your old garage door panels if you want to try any of these ideas out.
